Osaka Tennoji Zoo – Introducing the best animals, opening hours and access information

tennoji zoo osaka

Many people may say, “When I think of Tennoji, I think of Abeno Harukas!”
In my case, when I think of Osaka, I think of the Tennoji Zoo! Because I love hairy beasts.

So, let me introduce you to a typical and recommended sightseeing spot in Tennoji, Tennoji Zoo!

And read below for information about the Night Zoo! There’s even a hippo!

1. Tennoji Zoo’s monkeys

First, let me introduce you to some of the monkeys at the Tennoji Zoo!

1-1. Only here in Japan! Drill Chan

Tennoji Zoo OsakaI couldn’t get a close-up photo this time….
What kind of a monkey are you…Tennoji Zoo OsakaIt looks like this. Some of you may say this is not clear.
According to the description, it is “characterized by its pitch-black face and the white fur that grows around it.
He added, “They live deep in the forests, moving over large areas and eating fruits and other foods.”

We are curious about it, aren’t we? We hope you’ll take the time to see for yourself how precious she is!

Name: Drill
Classification: Monkeys (Cercopithecidae)
Exhibition Location: Koala and Monkey Area Animals (Monkey Baboon House, Chimpanzee House)
Range of distribution: Western Africa
Habitat: Mainly forested areas
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Endangered

Now, here is the next one, Drill-chan’s friend.

1-2. Your face is different! Mandrill-chan

Tennoji Zoo OsakaYour face and butt are blue! You can see it even from the side. This is Mandrill-chan.
The blue mandrill is a male. The female’s face is not so impressive.
This pattern is common in the animal kingdom. In the human world, it is the opposite.

Anyway, if you get a chance to see him in person, please see his face from the front!
“Oh! How did I end up with this face? and you will be shown the mysteries of the natural world.

And you should compare the drill and the mandrill, two very similar and very different figures! You must compare them!

Name: Mandrill
Classification: Gibbon Monkeys (Cercopithecidae)
Exhibition Location: Koalas and monkeys Area animals (Monkeys Baboon house, Chimpanzee house)
Range of distribution: Southern Cameroon to Gabon and Congo
Habitat: Mainly forested areas
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment:Endangered

Now, then, here’s a monkey.

1-3. The Gracious Elder! Brazza Guenon

Tennoji Zoo OsakaThis is Brazza Guenon.
The orange fur on the forehead looks like a crown.
And the pure white whiskers that hang down like a beard.
He is a very elegant elder. No, even though he is young, he has this appearance.
He is said to be “one of the most beautiful monkeys in the world.
Please say “It is a pleasure to meet you for the first time” when you see us.
Having said that, I also feel somehow very noble.
Incidentally, the elders move within a small area, visiting fruit-bearing trees and eating intensively.

Name: Brazza Guenon
Classification: Gibbon Monkeys (Cercopithecidae)
Exhibition Location: Koala and Monkey Area Animals (Monkey Baboon House, Chimpanzee House)
Range of distribution: Around Central Africa
Habitat: Forests and wetlands

This is the next one.

1-4. The sense of longevity is amazing! Lion-tailed monkey

Tennoji Zoo OsakaThe black body and buttocks (or is it buttocks?) are pink. The face is grayish.

Tennoji Zoo OsakaHere’s a Lion-tailed monkey!
His whole face seems to be wrapped in a white beard….
I thought “shishi” might have come from his face, which looks like a tategami, but he said “shishio” because the tip of his tail looks like a shishi (lion). I see.
Shishio monkeys live in the forest in groups of 10 to 20.
If I saw that, it would be kind of comforting….

Name: Lion-tailed monkey
Classification: Gibbon Monkeys (Cercopithecidae)
Exhibition Location: Koala and Monkey Area Animals (Monkey Baboon House, Chimpanzee House)
Range of distribution: India
Habitat: Highland woodlands
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Endangered

I’m still going!

1-5. The tiny Savannah Monkey

Tennoji Zoo OsakaThis is a different aspect from the other monkeys we have seen so far.
It is a tiny body.
This is Savannah Monkey. He has a beautiful coat color, but in fact, one part of this monkey tends to attract a lot of attention.
It’s a bit of a hard feature to describe here, so please do an internet search on “Savannah Monkey” first….

Savannah Monkey-chan can live in a very dry area as long as it has a watering hole.
When natural enemies such as snakes and eagles appear, they make warning calls and behave in a manner appropriate to their natural enemies, he said.
I would laugh if it had a very thick voice that didn’t match its body….

Name: Savannah Monkey
Classification: Gibbon Monkeys (Cercopithecidae)
Exhibition Location: Koala and Monkey Area Animals 《Monkey Baboon House, Chimpanzee House
Range of distribution: South of the Sahara Desert in Africa
Habitat: Predominantly savanna areas

Now that we have continued with the macaque family, let’s move on to a different family.

1-6. Long hands as the name suggests! Squirrel Gibbon

Tennoji Zoo OsakaLarger boy. Pitch black.
This is a “black-bellied macaque”.
They say they are apes that are close to humans.

Tennoji Zoo OsakaYou can’t tell from the way he is curled up, but his hands are very long.
Yes, they are. These people are members of the gibbon family.
Shoiit that long hand! Shoi shoi shoi! and move them in a dangling motion, as if they were playing “Untei,” a common game in parks.
A kindergartener like this would be a hero in no time.

Name: Siamangs
Classification: Monkeys (Cercopithecidae)
Exhibition Location: Koala and Monkey Area Animals (Monkey Baboon House, Chimpanzee House)
Distribution range: Malay Peninsula, Sumatra
Habitat: Mountainous forested areas
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Endangered

And now, to close out the monkey section, here he is!

1-7. Uncle Class Sadness! Mr. Chimpanzee

Tennoji Zoo OsakaAh …… what are you fretting about ……?
Anyway, it’s Mr. Chimpanzee!
Not even …… professional uncles can create this melancholy.
And if you are a woman, I am sorry.
Six chimpanzees live in the Tennoji Zoo.
Slouching and fidgeting, they are just like human beings.
I can only feel a sense of closeness.

Name: Chimpanzee
Classification: Human primates, family Hominidae, genus Chimpanzee
Exhibition Location: Koalas and monkeys Area animals (Monkeys Baboon house, Chimpanzee house)
Range of distribution: Around West and Central Africa
Habitat: Mainly forested areas
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Endangered

The Tennoji Zoo also has other unique monkeys.
Even if you dare to see only the monkeys, it is enjoyable enough.
Humans are also monkeys in origin. You may find a monkey who looks like you.

2. Tennoji Zoo Cats

I live with my cat, Tsukiko.
The room is filled with stuffed cats, mascots, and figurines.
There was even a time when all I bought were clothes with cats on them.
Recently, I have become more interested in larger cats, and I now understand why my sisters in Osaka wear leopard print and tiger face clothing.

2-1. You’ll feel right at home! Puma

Tennoji Zoo OsakaIt’s a puma. But wait, where is he?Tennoji Zoo OsakaThere he is!
I’m sorry to say that I can’t see your face at all.
But this paw and tail is a perfect kitty.
It is time for the cat to take a nap.
Puma is classified more like an Aedes aegypti than a leopard or lion.
Nevertheless, it is one of the largest and moderately fierce beasts among them.
However, I would like to mooch.

Name: Puma
Classification: Carnivora, Felidae, Puma
Exhibition Location: African savanna zone and animals in the surrounding area 《wolf, tiger, and wildcat enclosures》
Range of distribution: North to South America
Habitat: Mainly grasslands and forested areas

2-2. Fascinating supple body! Jaguar

Tennoji Zoo OsakaAt first glance, you may think this is a leopard, but it is not. The pattern is larger.
The famous car model of your car, which seems to run crazy fast…Tennoji Zoo OsakaIt’s a jaguar! What a big kitty! She’s so cute!Tennoji Zoo OsakaThe supple body is exactly that of a cat.
My cat, Tsukiko, also has supple limbs, but she has recently become plump…
We must learn from Jaguar’s slim body.

Jaguar is said to be the third largest of all cats.
We’ll have a second and a first for you later!
But for a third, it may look quite compact in size.

Still, this face with its eyes closed is completely kitty.
I want to stroke it. (Of course I can’t.)

Name: Jaguar
Classification: Civetes, Felidae, Leopards
Exhibition Location: African savanna zone and animals in the surrounding area 《wolf, tiger, and wildcat enclosures》.
Distribution range: Around Mexico to central South America
Habitat: Mainly forested riparian areas and swamps
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Least Endangered

Now, next is the zoo’s top animal.

2-3. Where is the dignity of the king of beasts! The Lion

Tennoji Zoo OsakaWhoa! Lying against the backdrop of Abeno Harukas is a lion!

The wildness of the building, which is so “on its own way” and does not care about the symbol (Harukas) of human progress, is unbelievable.

This is what is called an “ecological exhibit,” in which the landscape and environment in which the animals originally live are recreated so that visitors can see how they live.
Incidentally, the Reptile Ecology Museum (Eiffer) is also this ecological exhibit.Tennoji Zoo OsakaHey, hey, hey… …… Is this the kind of ecology you’re talking about?
Is your back itchy?Tennoji Zoo OsakaThis…is a girl kitty.
It’s no different from our Tsukiko who rolls around on the floor and sleeps….

Nevertheless, lions are said to be the second largest member of the cat family.
I talk to stray cats I meet on the street, but as you can imagine, if I met this cat, I would probably run and run away faster than I am capable of.
Can you manage it if you run away? I checked and found that Lion’s instantaneous top speed was 80 km/h.
It’s no good when you run away from them, so we have to give the impression that it’s not good to eat.
Incidentally, the cheetah, known as the fastest beast, is 100-120 km/h.
He can drive on the highway with room to spare.

Name: Lion
Classification: Feline Carnivora, Felidae, Leopards
Exhibition Location: African Savanna Zone and animals in the surrounding area 《アフリカサバンナ》.
Range of distribution: Southern Sahara to South Africa, parts of India, etc.
Habitat: Mainly savannas and rocky areas with bushes
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Endangered

Now, the last of the kitty’s friends is this one.

2-4. Tiger pattern and Buddha’s face! Mr. Amur tiger

Tennoji Zoo OsakaIt’s incredibly popular ……!

Tennoji Zoo OsakaIt’s Mr. Amur tiger!
This expression is like Buddha.

However, tigers are said to be the largest of all cats.
Tigers are said to live in rainforests, coniferous forests, or any place where there is forest, but Amur is the most northerly tiger.
And they are the largest species of tigers.
He has a cute paw, but he is very powerful indeed. ……

But it is a beautiful tiger pattern.
This flashy tiger pattern may seem too conspicuous to be a disadvantage when hunting, but the vertical stripes provide camouflage when targeting prey in the bushes.
And herbivores such as deer, which are prey, do not have color vision. So even if the color is as prominent as that of a railroad crossing, it will not be noticed.

Name: Amur tiger
Classification: Feline Carnivora, Felidae, Leopards
Exhibition Location: African savanna zone and animals in the surrounding area 《wolf, tiger, and wildcat enclosures》.
Distribution range: Amur River basin, including Siberia and northeastern China
Habitat: Forested areas, etc.
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Endangered

Oh no~ your kitty is adorable!
I still like cats.
I like Tsukiko the best, but I also like big cats.
I hope to see you all again!

3. No longer a stuffed animal! Bears of Tennoji

In my opinion, the No. 1 animal that tends to be made into stuffed animals is the bear.
Before I go any further, while they have a ferocious image, they can’t stop being adorable! I think that’s why.
So let me introduce you to the bears at the Tennoji Zoo!

First of all, there’s this bear!

3-1. Fashionable glasses girl! Spectacled Bear

Tennoji Zoo OsakaWhat a lovely picture plane! It looks like a page from a picture book.Tennoji Zoo OsakaThese people are spectacled bears.
The name comes from the white pattern around the eyes that looks like a pair of glasses.
These glasses have different shapes for each of you. They are so stylish!
Their staple food is, surprisingly, fruit. They also eat insects and rodents, which is different from the bear’s image.
They originally live in the forests of the Andes Mountains at about 2,500 meters above sea level. They are good at climbing trees.
But they seem to get along well. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

Name: Spectacled bear
Classification: Cats (Felidae), Bears (Ursidae)
Exhibition location: Animals in the Bird’s Paradise and surrounding areas 《Bear House》
Distribution range: Northeastern South America
Habitat: Mainly mountain forests
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Endangered

Now, on to the famous bears.

3-2. Not really ferocious! Japanese black bear

Tennoji Zoo OsakaOh dear, what have you got there?Tennoji Zoo OsakaWow! You fell, what a surprise!Tennoji Zoo OsakaWhat are you going to do? Still want to play?

Although it’s so cute that it inadvertently becomes a term of endearment for babies.
Japanese black bears usually have a ferocious image, but it’s hard to tell here.

The name comes from the white moon ring pattern on its chest, but some bears do not have it.
This bear can’t see the moon’s rings either…

And black bears, too, have nuts, fruits, and insects as their staple food.
Originally, black bears do not eat meat. So why do they sometimes attack people?
It is “for defense,” he says. At first they don’t think about eating.
But when they attack and learn, “Huh? Humans are so easy to catch.” If they learn that, they may start attacking people again.

Anyway, if you meet a bear in the mountains or something, if you turn around and make a gawking noise and run away, you are out of luck. They will chase you at speeds of up to 50 km/h. ……

Name: Japanese black bear
Classification: Cats (Felidae), Bears (Ursidae)
Exhibition location: Animals in the Bird’s Paradise and surrounding areas 《Bear House》
Range of distribution: Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
Habitat: Mountainous deciduous forests and shrublands

Now, the next bear…

3-3. The Sun bears look like big dogs!

Tennoji Zoo OsakaHere’s a little brown-faced Sun bear.
It is said to be the smallest of all bears.
They inhabit the tropical to subtropical regions of Southeast Asia. They are good tree climbers and often sleep on tree tops during the day on shelves made of branches. Just imagine how cute they are….

By the way, this Sun bear can imitate faces, and a study has been published.
When you are trying to communicate in some way, do you ever imitate the facial expressions of others without realizing it?
Until now, it was thought that only humans and gorillas could do this, but now it has been discovered that the Malay bear, which basically acts alone, can do it.
However, there are still some unknowns, such as the fact that the bears were not targeted in a completely wild state, and furthermore, we do not know if it is for communication….

Anyway… the only thing I’m sure of is that bears imitating each other’s facial expressions is insanely cute!

Name: Sun bear
Classification: Cats (Felidae), Bears (Ursidae)
Exhibition location: Animals in the Bird’s Paradise and surrounding areas 《Bear House》
Distribution range: Southeast Asia, Sumatra, Borneo, etc.
Habitat: Forested areas in lowlands and mountains
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Endangered

Last but not least, this popular bear!

3-4. Your name is from a pork bun! Polar Bear

Tennoji Zoo OsakaPlayin’ in the pool is a Polar Bear, the largest of the bears!
They are good swimmers and catch seals and fish to eat.
I can’t believe they eat seals!
The bear in front of me is doing something awesomely cute.

Tennoji Zoo OsakaSee, he is holding a tire and something yellow.
She looks like a girl playing make-believe, with her dolls as babies.
After all, their white bodies, also called “polar bears,” make them look more adorable.
At the Tennoji Zoo, a male “Gogo” and a female “Icchan” are now living with us after returning from a business trip to Adventure World in Wakayama.
This name is derived from “551,” the name of the restaurant “Hourai” known for its pork buns, which donated two of them to the zoo.
They hope to become a couple in the future and have a “551” baby.
I’m looking forward to it!

Name: Polar bear
Classification: Cats (Felidae), Bears (Ursidae)
Exhibition location: Animals in the Bird’s Paradise and surrounding areas 《Bear House》.
Range of distribution: Arctic
Habitat: Mainly near the sea
IUCN Conservation Status Assessment: Endangered

And the bears were adorable too!!!
There are all kinds of bears.
Even though she is big, she is a maiden in her behavior.
She was much more of a maiden than I was, whose beastliness was there when she drank alcohol.

4. What about lunch in the park?

I am the type of person who, if I go to the zoo, stays there from opening to closing (I can totally spend time alone), but when I do, I end up wanting lunch.

Tennoji Zoo OsakaAh, the restaurant!
But then I saw that it was closed… I thought this was a pinch…Tennoji Zoo OsakaTakoyaki, an Osaka specialty, was on sale!
I am relieved.

This building was originally a restaurant. It now operates as a shop selling stuffed animals.
Here’s what it looks like inside…Tennoji Zoo OsakaWoo hoo! I love it! Stuffed animals!
I’m a big fan of fluffy things.
I was tempted to buy one as a memento…but I held back the urge.
Because we have quite a few stuffed animals in our house.
When I became an arahant, I developed a kind of self-control, you know.

But the electric light hanging on the right side is cute.
Is it a tiger, I would like to have it.Tennoji Zoo OsakaThere is also a resting area that looks like a lawn.
This is a recommended resting place for fathers waiting for shopping time for their wives and children.Tennoji Zoo OsakaA chair with a back view of an animal. How adorable!
The beast is cute on the front as well as on the back.
And I like cat butts.Tennoji Zoo OsakaWe also have a wide variety of gacha gacha machines.
Tennoji Zoo OsakaOh, my, what a cute little car!
This is a kitchen car.
They sell fried food, fries, and ice cream.
Perfect for filling up on some small bites!Tennoji Zoo OsakaThis is the Savannah Shop.
You can buy soft ice cream and shaved ice! Especially in summer, it is hard to walk around the park, so we recommend taking a break to rehydrate yourself.
Keychains and other goods are also sold.

Currently, most of the food available in the Tennoji Zoo is snacks.
But since you are allowed to bring your own lunch, you can make and bring your own lunch or buy one around Tennoji Station.
There are even a few benches in the park! Great for children!Tennoji Zoo OsakaLuggage storage and rental strollers are also available!
The zoo is child-friendly.
(I’d love to ride in an elephant baby carriage, but I don’t think I can.)

5. Tennoji Zoo, it was a nice beast.

Tennoji Zoo, nice!
You can meet various kinds of monkeys, cats, and bears.
(There are many other animals, which I will introduce to you at another time.)

If you are coming from far away, I highly recommend you to stay at a hotel and enjoy your stay!
Let’s visit the zoo and also the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art and Chausuyama Tomb, which are also located in Tennoji Park.
There are also various shopping facilities around Tennoji Station, including Harukas.
Please come and experience the fun of Tennoji!
