samuhara shrine

Samuhara Shrine is located in Nishi Ward, Osaka City, in a quiet residential area, while Samuhara Shrine Okunomiya is located in Mimasaka Kamo, Okayama Prefecture, and the shrine has a long history, dating back more than 90 years. The name “Samuhara” is written in katakana because it cannot be written in kanji. Samuhara Shrine is known as one of the best power spots in Osaka, and people from all over the country are constantly visiting the shrine because of the immense power of the ring talisman. In this article, we will provide a thorough introduction of Samuhara Shrine.

1. What kind of benefits does it offer?

samuhara shrineThe main deity of Samuhara Shrine is

Samuhara Spirit: Amenominakanushi no Ookami (Great Goddess of the Heavens)
Takamimusubi no Okami
Kami-musubi no omikami
and the character “Samuhara” is a generic term for these three deities.

The three deities are govern safety, health and happiness. The shrine is believed to bring blessings for safety and good health, prosperity of family fortune, no injuries or illnesses, and prolongation of life and longevity.

2. History of Samuhara Shrine

It is said that the shrine was originally built in 1935 by Mr. Tomisaburo Tanaka, who rebuilt a dilapidated old shrine he found in his hometown, Nishigamo Village, Tomata County, Okayama Prefecture (now Kamo Town, Tsuyama City). The following year, it was removed for unauthorized promotion of the shrine, but after the war, Tomisaburo Tanaka rebuilt it at his own expense next to Toyokuni Shrine in Nakanoshima, Osaka. In 1961, the shrine was moved to its present location.

3-1. The sacred ring

Samuhara Shrine is very famous for its extremely hard-to-find ring amulet called gojinkan, which protects against bad luck. As soon as they arrive, they sell out! Living within a 10 minute walk of Samuhara Shrine, I tried a couple of times to find out when it was scheduled to arrive, but they were always sold out the same day they arrived. This ring amulet should be worn on your finger and not as a necklace on a string. Please keep the ring firmly in place when bathing. If it doesn’t fit your finger, temple staff will refuse to let you purchase it. Only one can be purchased per person and unfortunately, reservations are not possible.

3-2. Amulet types

Samuhara Shrine has various amulets in addition to the sacred rings.samuhara shrinesamuhara shrineThey do not have the same effect as the sacred rings, but they seem to be effective in warding off bad luck.

4. Highlights of Samuhara Shrine

“Spring Grand Festival” and “Autumn Grand Festival”

These are rare days when you can visit the shrine with the priests in the hall of worship. It only happens four days a year, on the 22nd and 23rd of April and October, regardless of the day of the week. Rings are difficult to obtain. So, here are some of the twice-a-year rituals at Samuhara Shrine that provide power in addition to rings.

The priests will explain how to worship at the Spring Grand Festival and the Autumn Grand Festival. Even those who have never attended an annual festival before can worship. A priest performs a prayer of congratulation at the hall of worship and performs the o-harai overhead. Afterwards, each worshipper offers a tamagushi (sacred skewer) prepared by the shrine. After the worship service is completed, a tessen (a ceremonial offering) is given. It is said that by receiving this offering, one can take the power of the gods into one’s body. By taking advantage of this power, we are likely to gain energy that is as strong as that of the rings.
